LEAD SUPPLIES IN NEW ZEALAND
NONE FROM AUSTRALIAN BLACK MARKET
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 22. Allegations by Sydney builders cabled from Sydney, that the black market in the export of lead to New Zealand is stopping the erection of brick houses in Australia are not taken seriously in Auckland. Inquiries reveal that local supplies of lead, though not over-plentiful, are sufficient to meet demands.
The current price for lead landed in Auckland is £llB a ton, after a £7 increase last week.
Auckland dealers say that no black market lead has been arriving. They say that while Sydney exporters might be glad to make such deals they would be unable to get export licences. New Zealand was supplied on a quota system from Broken Hill, now supplying a large proportion of the world’s needs. They said that this quota, with additional lead melted down in New Zealand from waste, was keeping up with the demands for the present*
