FELLOWSHIPS FOR ASIATICS
GOVERNMENT GRANTS £15,000
STUDY IN IJEW ZEALAND
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 21. The New Zealand Government had provided £15,000 for UNESCO fellowships, said the Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs) to-day. The amount of the fellowships granted to mature persons would be on the basis of £4OO a year, with £5O for travel within New Zealand. The committee to administer UNESCO Reconstruction Fellowships comprise Messrs A. F. McMurtrie (Acting-Director of Education), chairman, L. J. Wild, A. B. Thompson, F. R. Callaghan, and Dr. J. C. Beaglehole.
Countries in the Far East, including China, the Philippines, Malaya, Burma, India, and Pakistan, will eventually be offered fellowships under the New Zealand scheme, continued the Minister. In the first year only five would be available—two to China and one each to the Philippines, Malaya, and Burma.
“It is considered that the needs ot these Eastern countries for the kinds of training and experience available in New Zealand are more urgent than those of the war-devastated countries in Europe,” said the Minister. “European countries will later become eligible for the New Zealand scheme. In the case of the Pacific countries, it has been suggested that the Fellows might follow such fields of study as agriculture, rural life and education, Maori education and the education of native (island territory) peoples, social services, mining, engineering, teacher training, and the technical aspects ot broadcasting.”
