KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

INCREASED ALLOWANCES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 21. The Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs) this evening announced an increase in payments to kindergarten student teachers. The Government previously paid the whole allowance for kindergarten students in training, he said, at the rate of £7O per annum, plus a board allowance of £25 per annum, where the student was living away from home. These rates had now been increased by the Government to an allowance of £lOO per annum with a board allowance of £4O per annum where the student was living away from home. The alteration, which took effect from April 1, 1948, would not relieve kindergarten associations of the necessity of having to raise funds for other purposes, Mr McCombs said.
