YOUTH FOUND GUILTY OF RAPE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 21. After a retirement of 50 minutes a jury in the Supreme Court to-day found Desmond Walsh, aged 18, assistant naval cook, guilty of the rape on April 16 at Wellington ox a 20-year-old girl. The jury also convicted him on further charges, relating to the same Incident, of in- * decent assault and assault so as to cause actual bodily harm. The jury entered a strong recommendation to mercy because of accused’s youth. Mr Justice Fair remanded the accused for sentence.

Walsh’s trial followed his recent successful appeal for the reversal of his plea of guilty which he entered In the Magistrate’s Court on May 5.
