Greater Christchurch Scheme
PROPOSAL TO ADD 22,758 ACRES TO CITY Since 1867 the city of Christchurch has grown from 1249 acres to some 16,788 acres, and if the City Council’s proposals to absorb Riccarton borough and parts of Heathcote, Waimairi, Paparua, and Halswell counties is successful the city’s area will become about 39,546 acres. These figures were given to the Local Government Commission yesterday by Ewart Somers, the city engineer. Mr Somers said there ■were 728 acres in Riccarton borough, and the county areas which the council proposed should be in the city were: Waimairi, 7570 acres; Paparua, 2990 acres; Halswell, 810 acres; and Heathcote, 10,660 acres. For properly-planned development, the City Council felt that the control of transport and drainage should revert to the council. In the growth of the city, drainage, water supply, reading, and transport should go hand in hand, he said.
