SWIMMING
♦ . . CANTERBURY CENTRE MEETS The possibility of inducing smaller clubs to participate in swimming competitions organised by the centre was discussed at a meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. He thought the secretaries of some of the smaller clubs were not cognisant of the method by which members of their clubs could be entered in these events, said the chairman (Mr G. Laurie). There were probably a number of swimmers in these clubs capable of competing against those in the larger clubs, he said. On the motion of Mr D. Cane it was decided to suggest to clubs that a member of the centre attend their annual meetings and explain the work of the centre and otherwise encourage them. Remits to be sent to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Swimming Council include an amendment to the championship rules to make it necessary for swimmers competing in butterfly races to swim the butterfly stroke and those competing in orthodox races to swim ,orthodox styles. This would prevent a repetition of what occurred at the last championship meeting at Dunedin, when competitors in the butterfly stroke event swam orthodox style, said Miss D. Brown. In the medley races at the recent championships a number of swimmers had swum the breaststroke section in the butterfly style, said Miss Brown during discussion on another remit designed to ensure that the breaststroke section of medley races in future be swum in the orthodox fashion. The North Beach Club had. shown an increase in membership from 68 to 220 during the last season, said the secretary (Mr H. Benson), and was entitled to the centre’s pennant for the greatest increase in club membership during a season.
