RUGBY FOOTBALL

REINSTATEMENT FROM LEAGUE CODE

APPLICATION DECLINED An application by S. R. Bums, through the Malvern Sub-Union, for reinstatement from the League code was declined by the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. In his applications Burns said he had been automatically reinstated after the war and had played Rugby in 1946. He had been in several districts, in some of whicn there was no Rugby. He would be unable to play Rugby through injuries, but wished to take part in the administration of a club.

The chairman (Mr V. L. Jensen) said the applicant had been chopping and changing his code. If he had been reinstated once, and had played League after that, then a second application should be not be allowed.

The motion was carried after an amendment by Mr J. O. Hattersley that the application be forwarded to the New Zealand Rugby Union, without comment, had lapsed for want of a seconder. Two applications from players aged 16 and 17 for reinstatement were forwarded on with favourable recommendations. Cne applicant said he had played one game of League and did not enjoy the experience. The second said that two seasons of League, left him of the opinion that Rugby was the better game. The applicants were L. Andrews and-R. Kett.

The announcing of race results over the loud-speaker system at Lancaster Park was criticised by Mr L. B. Newton. The union should not set itself up as an agent and propagandist for racing clubs. With that exception, he considered the loud-speaker system a good idea. Mr A. K. Johnson and Mr R. R. Masters said they agreed with Mr Newton, Mr Johnson adding that perhaps the two major race results could be broadcast over the system. Mr J. N. Clarke: A lot of people are interested in race results, and it does not do any harm. The system was an innovation, Mr Jensen said. To a large extent the union would have to learn by trial and error how best to us® it. St. Andrew's College was granted permission co play Timaru Boys’ High School at Timaru on July 26, and Scots’ College (Wellington) at Christchurch on August 14.
