"MUSICAL CHAIRS”

Sir,—May I ask you for the courtesy of your columns to reply to your correspondent “Progress,” who. preferring to hide behind the immunity of the inevitable nom-de-plume. makes some criticisms of the Canterbury Repertory Society. I was certainly the author of the article on play production which appeared in the programme of ths recent production of “Musical Chairs,” but I feel obliged to correct your . correspondent’s impression, or the impression. that he was .endeavouring to give, that 1 was the. producer of the play in question. “Musical Chairs” was not produced by me, but by a guest producer. If your correspondent “Progress,” who is. I suspect, a member of the “underground movement,” has the courage to live up to the sentiment expressed by his nom-de-plume. and really wants the society to "progress,” he should come out into the open with his criticisms.—Yours, etc., FREDERICK FARLEY. . July 13, 1948. Sir, —Thanks are due to “The Press” for providing, instead of fatuous flattery of amateur producers and players, intelligent criticism of them. Everyone seriously interested in the drama will commend your critic’s comments on the recent production of “Musical Chairs,” which was indeed so bad as to convert a meaningful play into a meaningless one.—Yours, etc., REPERTORY MEMBER. July 13, 1948.
