MACHINERY FOR N.S.W. MINES

(Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 2. The Joint Coal Bc-ard has ordered £3.000,000 worth of machinery overseas to mechanise New South Wales mines, according to the Minister of Supply and Shipping (Senator W. P. Ashley). The board hopes to increase underground coal production •by 6,600,000 tons a yeanby 1952.. This increase represents a 50 per cent, gain over the estimated target for this year. Senator Ashley said that Australia lagged seriously behind other countries in the mechanisation of its mines. In 1947 95 per cent, of American and 75 per cent, of British coal was machine cut. but the ratio in Australia was only 40 per cent.
