NEW WORKSHOPS BLOCK
GRANT TO TECHNICAL COLLEGE
CONSTRUCTION TO START SOON
A new workshops block, the first part of a completely new set of workshops, will be built shortly at the Christchurch Technical College. A grant of £95,225 for the erection of le block has been approved by the Education Department, and the board of governors of the college has been authorised to accept the tender of Mr N. Caldwell for that amount. Permission of the Building Controller for the work to proceed has also been received. Tenders ranging from £95,225 to £llB.OOO were submitted to the board by Christchurch contractors.
The building, which is to be of reinforced concrete and faced in red brick, will be placed on the college’s newly acquired land at the corner of Madras ana Fyfe streets. This land was purchased by the Government from the City Council and has been closed as a road by the council.
The main entrance to the building will face west on to Madras street, where there will be a frontage of 142 feet. The depth will be 254 feet, with a portion at the back, 142 feet wide, completing an H shape. The ground floor of the building, which will be of two storeys, will contain pattern-making, junior and senior carpentry and joinery, and cabinet-making rooms, together with a woodwork machine shop. In the cabinet-making shop will be a french polishing and finishing room. On the first floor thpre will be a junior and senior mechanics’ laboratory, four trade drawing rooms, a staff common room and staff library, two lecture rooms (one of which will also be used for visual education), and good accommodation for a technical library With the advent of daylight training of apprentices, the building is considered to be of vital importance to the college, and it is proposed to extend it at a later date to include engineering and metal-working trades generally. * T ?
