WALLABIES IN SOUTH CANTERBURY
GOOD BAGS REPORTED
From Our Own Reporter
TIMARU, July 2. ‘First introduced into the Waimate district in the early days of settlement by Mr Michael Studholme, wallabies have now spread into the surrounding •countryside and have multiplied rapidly. Sportsmen with gun and dog have kept, them in check for many years, but recently ths work has been handed over to Government shooters. Thirty-four years, ago two men, Messrs T. L. Squire and J. McCully, trekked into the Hunter Hills on what must have been the first wallaby drive in New Zealand. Their bag was two. Four years later a wallaby club was formed, which in 1932 presented a cup to Mr Squire and bestowed on him the title of “wallaby king.” Each year Mr Squire, with his specially trained pack of dogs, turns out to lead the shoot. This year on a single day’s shoot 23 men bagged 170. Eight sportsmen secured what is believed to be the record bag of the season of 181 wallabies in tne hills behind Waimate recently.
