LEAD PRODUCTION
DEVELOPMENT AT TE AROHA PLANNED (PA.) TE AROHA, July 2. Plans to produce 4000 tons of lead each year from the Te Aroha field were announced to-day by the Auckland Smelting Company, which at present comprises only Messrs B. J. Dunsheath, machinery importer, and H. J. Bassett, a metallurgist. Saying that the scheme has the support of the Government, Messrs Dunsheath and Bassett say they are prepared to start within a few weeks provided agreement is reached with the Borough Council to permit access through the waterworks reserve. The seam may otherwise be worked from the north-east of the mountain through Waikino. Te Aroha is a proven lead field, but has not been worked for many years. Messrs Dunsheath and Bassett say they have machinery for a new process eliminating fumes and extracting ore economically. The present source of supply, Australia, is unable to give full requirements. ® The price of lead was quoted as low as £lO a ton before the war, and is now quoted at £IIS sterling a ton.
