ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE: KNIGHT COMMANDER Acting Air Commodore Frank Whittle, R.A.F., inventor of the jet engine. KNIGHTS BACHELOR Arthur Leigh Ashton, director of the Victoria and Albert Museum. James Raitt Brown, secretary of the Church Commissioners for England.
