WORLD PEACE

SALVATION ARMY’S CONTRIBUTIONS “The only hope of world peace is a Christian church, revived and refined and thrown back on its early foundations,” said Colonel Edward Slattery, an Australian Salvation Army evangelist, who is touring New Zealand conducting a “Fighting Faith” campaign, in an interview in Christchurch yesterday. “The Salvation Army stands on the tableland •of civilisation with a clear, comprehensive vision of th§ commonwealth of humanity,” he said. ‘‘lt belongs to no one nation or group of nations, but to the human race. It is breaking down geographical boundaries and racial distinctions, and making a contribution to a sounder and saner internationalism. Its drum beats sanity in a world of insanity.” Fear played an enormous part in the two world wars, and to-day fear had the nations oh tenterhooks, continued Colonel Slattery. “The Army believes that no nation can be indifferent to the wants and woes of another. For a reordered and beautified world the shackles of old traditions, old suspicions, prejudices, and hatreds must be shattered. This is the time for courage, hope, faith, and mutual understanding, and for men everywhere to turn to Jesus Christ. If they do, peace will be as total as war.” Colonel Slattery said there had been a resurgence of Christianity in many war-devastated countries. The officer in charge of the Army’s activities in Germany had stated recently that there was colossal devastation and hunger in the country, but there there was ‘‘a springtime of spiritual revival.” ‘‘l would not be surprised at all if the next revival came from Germany or even China,” said Colonel Slattery.
