FRESH MEAT SUPPLIES
COMMISSION TO SIT IN CHRISTCHURCH TQ-DAY The commission appointed on April 22 to inquire into fresh meat supplies in New Zealand will hold its first public sitting in Christchurch at .thfU Chamber of Commerce hall at 10 a.nr. to-day. Among those who will appear before the commission to-day will be Mr W. S. Hughes, who will present evidence on behalf of the Canterbury Master Butchers’ Association, and Mr G. D. Wise, president of the North Canterbury Stock and Station Agents’ Association. Counsel for the stock and station agents will be Messrs A. I. Cottrell and P. H. T. Alpers, and for the butchers Mr A. T. B. Green, of Wellington, secretary of th’e New Zealand Master Butchers’ Federation. It is likely that other witnesses may appear fo-day also. Evidence on behalf of Canterbury Federated Farmers will be given to-morrow by Mr I. L. M. Coop, chairman of the meat and wool section, and probably to-morrow Mr W. A. JamiesoDy of Koiterangi, will give evidence for Westland Federated Farmers. The commission will conclude its sittings m Christchurch on Friday. Evidence will be heard in Dunedin on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week, and on June 22, 23, 24, and 25 the commission will hold its final sittings in Wellington? It is required to present, its report to the Government on or before June 30. The commission comprises Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., Christchurch (chairman), Mr A. P. O’Shea, secretary of Federated Farmers, Wellington, Mr J. W. Perry, a butcher, Auckland. Mr G. Simpson, liaison officer, Department of Labour, Wellington. Mr R. B. Tennent, Assistant-Director-General of Agriculture, and Mr L. C. Webb. Director of Marketing, Wellington. The secretary of the commission is Mr J. Lang, Wellington. •
