REJECTION OF TRUSTEESHIP

Decision of U.N. Assembly MEDIATOR TO BE SENT NEW YORK, May 14. At the United Nations Special General Assembly to-night it was decided by 20 votes to 15, with 19 abstentions, not to accept the United States proposal to establish a trusteeship-type regime for Jerusalem. Arab, Soviet, and British objections led to the .rejection of the scheme. The Political Committee of the Assembly voted 31 to 7, with 16 abstentions, to send a United Nations mediator to Palestine. The committee also voted to relieve the Palestine Commission of further responsibilities. New Zealand voted in favour of both the Assembly’s resolutions.
