GLENROWAN AND ADA SCOTT

WINNERS AT WASHDYKE The Temuka trainer, T. H. Gunning, won the Opihi Trot Handicap with Glenrowan and the Beaconsfield Trot Handicap with Ada Scott at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on SaturdaX siXryear-old gelding by Sandydale from Princess Marcia, Glenrowan showed some ability at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on May 8 when, after setting the pace in the middle stages, he finished third to Sirocco and Mobile Globe in the Trial Handicap of two miles. On the strength of that form Glenrowan was sent out first favourite on the win machine in the Opihi Trot Handicap .on Saturday. Confidently driven by H- Butcher, Glenrowan began quickly and when the field settled down he was leading from Ben’s Son, Last Wrack, Gloxania, Merrymaker, and Rhonda Grattan. Glenrowan was always master of the situation and he carried on to win nicely by a length from an outsider in Last Wrack, with the two-year-old Merrymaker in third place. The nineteenth favourite in a field of 23 betting chances, Last Wrack, which was handy all the way, is trained at Sutherlands by S. A. Orr. . A nine-year-old gelding by Wrack from an Oinako mare, Last Wrack gained his only other placing for the season when he finished third to Super Scotch and Sporty Boy in the second division of the Morven Trot Handicap at the Waimate Racing Club’s meeting on April. 10. Obviously improved by his race in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes on May 8, Merrymaker gave a fine performance to finish third in the Opihi Trot Handicap. A massive son of Lucky Jack and Arietta, Merrymaker appears to be improving with each race. He should go close to winning the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting next month fox - his owner-trainer, O. E. Hooper, who won the classic for Mr C. L. Rhodes with On Approval in 1946. Beaconsfield Trot Handicap Allowed to go out 13-11 in the betting, Ada Scott, which had a record of a win and three minor placings in her first seven starts for the season, finished brilliantly to beat Wayfarer by a head in the Beaconsfield Trot Handicap. , Squire Dillon and Wayfarer began smartly and when the field settled down they were followed by Fulgent, Special Merit, All Ashore. Ada Scott, French Gold, and Ipso Facto. Squire Dillon broke with about half the journey covered and Wayfarer carried on in the lead. Ipso Facto made a fast run which carried him into second place with half a mile to go and he followed Wayfarer into the straight with French Gold, Farnborough, and Ada Scott all showing up. Wayfarer appeared to have the race in safe keeping with a furlong to go but, once she got clear, Ada Scott overhauled him and she held on to win narrowly. A three-year-old filly, Ada Scott, which races in the interests of Mr J. F. O’Connell, who educated and trained her for her early races, is by U Scott from Princess Ada, by Jack Potts from Molly Desborough. the dam of other winners in King Potts and Top Line. A winner herself with a record of 4min 36 4-ssec to her credit, Molly Desborough is by Desborough from Molly McKinney, by Young McKinney from Seacliff, by Brooklyn. Wayfarer brought his record to three second placings in his last six starts when, after beginning more smartly than usual, he gave a solid performance to earn the second prize for B. Grice, who trains him at Winslow. A solidly-made four-year-old brother to Haughty, Wayfarer should eventually take his place in good company. , Ipso Facto, which gained a win and. two second placings in his- first seven starts for the season when trained at Templeton by N. Berkett, was allowed to go out 19-20 in the betting in the- Beaconsfield Handicap. Driven by G. Cameron, who is now training him at New Brighton, Ipso Facto gave a pleasing performance, and on this display a winning turn for him should not be far away. A five-year-old chestnut gelding. Bay Machine, a recent addition to J. Young’s team at Addington, appeared unlucky in the Waitaki Sprint Handicap at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on May 8. Bay Machine looks well and he appeals as an early winner. Gold C&se h&s raced consistently to be placed in four of his last five races. A likely improver, he may gain his first win for the season for D. Bennett in the Miramar Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. The free-)egged pacer, Ladylike, showed a lot of speed fdr more than a mile in the Enfield Handicap at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on May 8, but fehe weakened when the pressure was applied. L. G. Smillie’s team at Timaru includes a promising two-year-old filly in Mowbray. which is by Wrackful from Pretty Match. The committee of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club is endeavouring to arrange for Highland Fling to attempt to lower Lawn Derby’s mile record of Imin 59 2~ssec at its meeting at Addington - next week. After beating a strong field in the Otago Pacing Free-for-all at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on May 1, Highland Fling was paraded again within an hour and succeeded in lowering the track record for one mile to 2min Isec, in spite of adverse conditions. The day was cold and a strong southerly wind hampered Highland Fling in the back straight, which he had to negotiate twice. Highland Fling always appeared to be doing his work easily, and it is obvious that his time would have been much better under perfect conditions. The roomy Addington course is expected to provide good going next week and, if the atmospheric conditions are suitable, Highland Fling should prove capable of establishing a new record. Main Race at Auckland Black Machine, one of the outsiders of the field, caused a surprise when he led all the way to win the C. F. Mark Memorial Handicap, the main event for pacers at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Monagh Leagh broke at the start and Checkmate made his task harder by beginning slowly. Black Machine was the smartest to begin, and he set the pace in the early stages from Captain Gaillard, Dyrham Lea, Contender, Gamble King, and Maudeen. Black Machine was clear with six furlongs to go, but the field bunched approaching the entrance to the straight, where the favourite, Maudeen, broke just after commencing a fast run. Once straightened up for the sprint home, Black Machine stayed on well to win from Dyrham Lea with the fastfinishing Sprayman in third place. ' Then came Contender, Captain Gaillard, Jack’s Son, and Doctor Ted. Maudeen, which lost her chance when she broke at a critical stage of the race, atoned for her mistake when she won the second division of the Farewell Handicap from Single Direct later in the afternoon. The winner of four races last season, Black Machine, which is trained at Takanini by*his owner, W. H. Andrews, raced well earlier in the season to finish a head behind Single Direct in the Takanini Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on 30, but he subsequently lost form, finishing out of a place in his next seven races. An aged gelding. Black Machine is by a good performer in the Machine Brick horse. Auto Machine, from Wattlewin, by the imported Wattle Derby from Koniniwood, by Wildwood Junr. from Velvetvale. Dyrham Lea, which finished third to Single Direct and Maudeen on the first day of the meeting, gave another solid performance to earn the second prize for Messrs J. R. Henderson and P. Edwards. A winner earlier in the season, Dyrham Lea, which is by Logan Fraser from Satin Queen, the dam of other winners, including Battle Colours, Warwick and Uranium, should continue to pay his way next season. In T. Thompson’s Stable Emily Volo, which raced well earlier in the- season when trained at New Brighton by L. Davidson to gain a win and seven minor placings in her first 12 races, was transferred to T. Thompson’s stable at Riccartoh last week. A fiveryear-old mare, Emily Volo is by Lusty Volo from Emily de Oro, the dam of other winners, including Special Agent, Frisky Bill, and News Agent. By Rey de Oro.
