78,835 WORKING DAYS LOST
A total of 78,835 working days was lost as a result of strikes during 1947, according to the latest issue of the Abstract of Statistics. There were 123 direct strikes, four sympathy strikes, and six partial strikes, and’ £123,326 in wages was lost to the 22,170 men involved.
Most working days were lost in the freezing industry. The 25 strikes in this industry cost the workers £49,661 in wages and 28,585 working days were lost.
In the coalmining industry there were 53 strikes during the year. A total of 25,408 working daysvwas lost, and the men lost £41,874 in wages. Wharf labour was concerned in 12 strikes, which cost the men £16,705 in wages. Working days lost totalled 14,819.
The average duration of the strikes in all industries was 5.89 days, the highest average being 18.39 in ' the building industry (seven strikes), and the iowest 0.38 days in the milk pasteurising and bottling industry (two strikes). No lockouts are recorded.
