LAND SETTLEMENT
Sir, —Mr Skinner has ignored the questions in my last letters. Perhaps he is not so conversant wfth land matters in Canterbury as the Commissioner of Lands, Mr Preston. In North Canterbury alone 40,000 acres are being farmed by the Lands and Survey Department. If these properties cannot be developed from date of purchase, why acquire them? It took up to six years to settle Motunau, Cheviot Hills, and Green Hills. Now numerous other stations are anxiously awaiting improvement. Does Mr Preston really believe it takes such a time to work these .places? There are too many meddling departments, so let private enterprise show how once again. If the Lands and Survey Department cannot cope with the problem, then let returned men at the head of affairs—men who are genuinely interested in the affairs of their comrades. Election 1949 will prove, and why not?—Yours, etc., AM I ALONE? May 14, 1948.
