REGULAR ARMY CADETSHIPS
MANY APPLICATIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH Since it was announced last Saturday that youths between the ages of 16 and 17 years and 11 months would be recruited as cadets for the Regular Army. 35 applications have been received at the headquarters of Area 10, King Edward Bariacks, Christchurch. The Area Commander (LieutenantColonel I. L. Bonifant) said yesterday that several of the applicants were youths \yho had left school. He said that it was intended to train these youths not only as soldiers but as experts in one of a wide variety of trades, so that at the end of his period of service, from five to eight years, the cadet might either rernain in the service or go into civilian life as a fully qualified tradesman, with up to £.200 by way of gratuity. Cadets who show special promise will be offered the chance of education up to the standard required of Duntroon cadets. Those who qualify will have the opportunity of attending one of the famous Royal Military Colleges overseas and. in this way, of being commissioned officers.
