ARMY OFFICERS TO RETIRE

SOUTHERN MILITARY DISTRICT

Several officers of the Regular Army In the Southern Military District will retire on March 31. They are:-Lieutenant-Colonel A. Bongard, 0.8. E., M.C., area commander, Area 10. Lieutenant-Colonel Bongard joined the Ist New Zealand Expeditionary Force in September, 1915, and served overseas, being awarded the Military Cross at Passchendaele when he was a second lieutenant. He joined the New Zealand Regular Army in 1919. with the rank of lieutenant and was area staff officer, Area 11 (Dunedin), for some years before being appointed G. 5.0.1., Southern Military District Headquarters. He has been area commander Area 10 for four and a half years. He was awarded the 0.8. E. in the New Year’s honours list in 1946. Lieutenant-Colonel Bongard will be succeeded by Major I. L. Bonifant, D. 5.0.. E.D. Major J. P. O’Connor will relinquish the appointment of commanding officer 11 Coast Regiment, R.N.Z.A., and will be succeeded by Major R. de la Cour, R.N.Z.A.

Major R. J. Eyre will relinquish the appointment of Camp Commandant, Burnham, and will be succeeded by Major C. S. Wroth, New Zealand Regiment.

Captain H. D. Hunt will relinquish the appointment of Area Quartermaster, Area 10, and will be succeeded by Lieutenant W. A. Staff, New Zealand Regiment. Captain J. J. Fitzgerald will relinquish the appointment of Area Officer, Area 10, and will be succeeded by Lieutenant J. R. Benge, New Zealand Regiment. Lieutenant E. J. Haybyrne will relinquish the appointment of Officer Commanding the small arms and machine-gun .section of the armaments and general workshops, Burnham, and will be succeeded by Lieutenant G. W. Weeds, R.N.Z.E.M.E. Major A. J. Moore. M.8.E., has relinquished the appointment of Commander, Area 9 (Nelson) and has taken up duty as Deputy-Assistant Quartermaster General, Southern Military District Headquarters. He was succeeded as area commander by Captain R. E. Johnston, New Zealand Regiment.
