Australian Naval Deserters.—Two stoker mechanics of 3.M.A S._ Australia, Ordinary Seaman Edward Charles Hawthorne and Ordinary Seaman John Wilson Elmore, both aged 19. were tried by court-martial on board the ship at.. Wellington yesterday on charges of desertion. Both pleaded guilty and were sentenced to one year’s imprisonment with hard labour, subject to confirmation by the Australian Naval Board. It was stated that they deserted at Port Chalmers on March 8, and were arrested together by a police constable several days later.—(P-A.)
