DEPUTATION TO MR CHIFLEY
(Rec. 12.30 a.m.) CANBERRA, Mar. 19. Seeking Commonwealth intervention in the Queensland dispute, a delegation of three executives of the Australasian Council of Trade Unions had a two-hour talk with the Federal Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) to-day. Afterwards Mr Chifley said there had been an exchange of views on the strike as a preliminary to a visit by the delegation to Brisbane on Sunday to confer with the strike leaders and the State Premier (Mr E. M. Hanlon). Asked whether he, would go to Brisbane to take part in the settlement negotiations, Mr Chifley said: “I do not think there is ahy reason at present why I might go there.” The president of the Australasian Council of Trade Unions (Mr P. J. Clarey), who was a member of the delegation, said* the delegation would attempt to assist in any way possible to obtain a settlement of the dispute, but had no power to intervene directly.
