CANADA’S ARMED STRENGTH
INCREASE FAVOURED IN COMMONS
PRIME MINISTER SPEAKS ON CRISIS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)
(Rec. 7 p.m.) OTTAWA, March 18. After hearing President Truman’s address many Canadian members of Parliament said that ' Canada’s reaction was likely to be an increase of the Canadian forces, which now total only 34,000. There was no suggestion, however, that Canada Ayoujd adopt universal training.
Addressing a Liberal Party caucus before Mr Truman’s speech, the Prime Minister (Mr W. L. Mackenzie King) said that the international situation had never been worse.
Without mentioning the prospect of war, Mr Mackenzie King said that the crisis might well come to a head in a matter of weeks. The Italian elections in April were of the greatest importance.
