"In common with most civilised countries. New Zealand continues to experience a mounting divorce rate—doubtless an aftermath of the war,” says the Abstract of Statistics, commenting on figures which show that 2363 petitions were filed in 1946, compared with 1099 in 1936. Of the 2363 petitions filed during 1946 for dissolution or nullity of marriage, 1324 were husbands’ petitions and 1039 petitions by wives. Corresponding figures for 1936 were 536 and 563 respectively. The principal grounds for divorce cited in the petitions in 1946 were:— adultery, 586; desertion, 348; non-com-pliance with order for restitution of conjugal rights, 415; and separation for not less than three years, 973. The duration of marriage at the time of filing of the 2363 petitions was under five years in 407 cases, from five to 10 years in 823. from 10 to 15 years in 449, from 15 to 20 years in 306. from 20 to 30 years in 286, and 30 years and over in 92 cases.
