WAIKATO HYDRO STRIKE
TRIBUNAL TO BE SET UP
ENGINEERS MEET MR FRASER From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, March 19. The Government proposes to set up a tribunal to consider matters in dispute in the Mangakino Hydro-electric Works strike.
Officers of the Professional Engineers’ Association waited on the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) to-night to discuss details of the proposal. An announcement ‘from the Government concerning the tribunal and the negotiations is expected early next week. _ *
The National Executive of the Federation of Labour met from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to-day. The secretary of the federation (Mr K. McL. Baxter) said to-night that he was not in a position to make any comment on the Mangakino dispute. No statement was forthcoming from the Prime Minister, the Minister of Works (Mr R. Semple), or the Minister of Labour (Mr A. McLagan).
MEN ON ONE JOB REFUSE SUPPORT
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 19. By a two to one majority, a resolu--tion urging financial aid to the Mangakino hydro workers who are on strike was defeated at a lunch hour meeting of Public Works Department employees at Devonport. A secret ballot was then held on the issue, and it also resulted in a vote against support. Representatives of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Workers’ Union . addressed the meeting before the voting. '
