CRITICISM OF “NEW” EDUCATION

CHALLENGE TO CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE (P.A.) DUNEDIN, March 19. “I am not a betting man unless there are some certainties about, but I bet I could give you a spelling test that you could not do. I bet I could put a Standard VI arithmetic test* in front of you that you would not be able to do.” With those words the AssistantDirector of Education (Mr A. F. McMurtrie) challenged delegates to the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce after listening to a great deal of criticism of what was called the “new” education. His remarks aroused laughter which was not linmixed with consternation. No one appeared ready to accept the challenge.
