VICTORIA COLLEGE RESOLUTION
CANTERBURY STUDENTS’ DISAGREEMENT
The Canterbury University College Students’ Association decided at the annual meeting last evening to instruct the president of the association (Mr D. F. Symon) to make a statement to the newspapers dissociating the Canterbury association from the recent views of the Victoria University College 'Students’ Association executive. .The Victorian executive congratulated Mr Gottwald "on the triumph of democracy in Czechoslovakia.”
Mr D. Sheat suggested that the president take to the meeting of the New Zealand University Students’ Association in Dunedin a motion of censure of the persons concerned.
Mr M. Newman said the public would be pleased to know that a proper general meeting felt a slur had been cast on students m general. He was supported by Mr D. Elder and Mr J. McWilliam, the latter pointing out that a meeting was to be called at Victoria College to discuss the executive’s action. There was a suggestion of censure there and any action by Canterbury College would be unnecessary. he said.
An unknown speaker: Gentlemen (he was interrupted by someone shouting “Comrades”), gentlemen, the newspapers give no free and clear view of what Communism really is. I suggest that we support Victoria in their effort for the freedom, of the press.
The .discussion was interrupted frequently at this stage by interjections, but the motion was carried on the voices without a great deal of dissent.
