EXCELLENCY

OFFER OF 5000 GUINEAS REFUSED

An offer of 5000gns was made this week, through the bloodstock department of Pyne,. Gould, Guinness Ltd., for the three-year-old filly Excellency, by Salmagundi—Rbdeur. When her Southland owner, Mr W. T. Oliver, • declined the offer, he was asked if an increase in the price would tempt him. His reply was prompt, that the filly was not for sale. Had the deal been completed. Excellency would have remained in New Zealand, but beyond that there is no information available a 4 to the source of the offer made for her.

The main interest in the work done at Riccarton yesterday morning was provided by the jumpers, including some with Easter engagements. Bravura and Master Play gave a good exhibition while going once round the steeplechase fences in company. They will race on the flat at Oamaru as a pre-

liminary to steeplechases at Riverton. Bravura is more forward than his mate and he will have admirers in the Great Western Steeplechase, in which R. JHawes will ride him. Master Play will race later in the meeting. W. Barr should do well with this pair during the next few months.

Two novices being educated to race oyer country in the winter . shaped well in some practice- over the brush fences. They are Cavalryman, an Irish Lancer five-year-old, in the team of Register and Hanrahan, and a Sky Pilot gelding in E. J. Jennings’s stable. Little Billy jumped well when sent over four hurdles. He has not raced among the jumpers since early last season, but he has not forgotten the business. For Riverton

A. J. Griffin has decided not to start Roman Son on the first day at Riverton, but R. J. Hawes will ride him in the steeplechase on the second day. J. L. Stove will go to Riverton at Easter to ride Night Prince and Open Cast in their steeplechase engagements. Trip Cancelled Double Cross is showing signs of soreness, and C. Emerson has cancelled his proposed trip to Oamaru. Oamaru Riders The following riding engagements have

been made for Oamaru:—J. S. Lundy, All’s Fair. Early Night; R. G. Bradshaw. Tweedside, Dowlair, Ruling Night, Air Lord; G. G. Hampton, Aberdare, Sally Gazelle; A. J. Murray, Bravura, Master Play; J. L. Stove. Petty Cash.

The Hob Scratched The Hob has been scratched for all engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Easter meeting.

Sister to Indian Gold Jaconet will be an interesting runner in the Pacific Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. In her only two starts Jaconet finished third in the Nursery Handicap at Hastings on January’ 3 and second in the Fitzherbert Handicap at Trentham on January 17. In both races she was finishing on. At Trentham in January she looked like a filly that would be much improved by the autumn. Jaconet is a sister to Indian Gold, and is trained at her as a yearling for 1000 guineas. She is engaged in the two-year-old handicaps at Riccarton at Easter.
