CAUDRAY

SOLID DISPLAY AT ADDINGTON

Caudray created a good impression when, driven by R. J. Berry, who trains him at Yaldhurst, he finished on, well to beat Jeeves by two lengths in the Speedway Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington last Saturday. Northern Lass swung around at the start, and Mountain Hall, Grattan Drive, Scholarship and Good Review all lost ground when they began slowly. Once into his stride, Mountain Hall showed a lot of speed to take the lead, and at the end of half a mile he was followed by Caudray, Bonny Clare, Scholarship, Aspanail, Jeeves, Maida Dillon, Good Review, Tam o’ Shanter, Commotion, Caledonian Girl, Logan Rey, Desert Lad, and Grattan Drive. Bonny Clare worked her way into the lead with half a mile to go, but she was passed by Caudray approaching the entrance to tne straight where Scholarship and Jeeves issued challenges. Jeeves momentarily appeared as the likely winner as he overhauled Caudray with a furlong to go, but his run was shortlived, and Caudray was actually going away from him as the winning post was reached.

A useful type, Caudray, which races in the interests of Mr J. Caudray is now at the top of his form, ana he should race well over the twomilr - cp"

.ties in the £l4OO Canterbury Handicap on the second day of the meeting on Saturday.* In the absence of his owner-trainer, G. R. Bates, who is in hospital suffering from injuries to his shoulder and ribs which he received when Gallant Thorpe fell with him in the Washdyke Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on March 6, Jeeves was driven by C. C. Devine. With better luck in the running in the early part of the race, Jeeves may have proved harder to beat. Usually a quick beginner, Scholarship did not go away smoothly, but, once on the journey, he showed a lot of speed and. in the circumstances, his third placing was full of merit. A speedy son of Grattan Loyal and Oxford Queen, Scholarship should soon win a race for Messrs A. L. Matson and C. S. Thomas.
