AGREEMENT IN BRUSSELS

COMMENT BY “THE TIMES * (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, March 13 Emphasising that the full importance of the Brussels agreement for a fivePower treaty can be seen only against the background of world events, “The Times,” in a leading article, says: “In its deepest sense the new treaty means that the nations of north-west-ern Europe now recognise a common bond and unity transcending old rivalries and divisions of national policy. “The treaty is both defensive and constructive. It is defensive in its pledges of automatic mutual assistance against agression by Germany or any other Power and constructive in its pledges to help one another towards a better and more prosperous future.”

“The Times” adds: “With its usual blundering ineptitude the Soviet official newspaper. ‘lzvestia’ has already written oft the treaty as ‘a plot against peace and against the democratic movement in Europe.’ If this is a convoluted way of saying that Britain, France and Benelux countries intend to direct their efforts against Communism and the tactics of Prague, ‘lzvestia’ is right.”
