UNITED I LEADING IN WOMEN’S GRADE
The second successive defeat* of NorthLinwood in the Canterbury Lawn -Tennis Association’s senior women’s competitions, which were continued on Saturday, has left United 1 in the lead. There is only one round to pay. United 111 had an easy win over- North Linwood by six rubbers to 0. The match between United I and South Brighton was keenly contested. United I winning by three games. Each team won three rubbers. The section finalists in the second mixed grade were found. They were St. Paul's and St. Albans, who will play off next Saturday. Sumner won the final of the under 21 mixed grade after a close game with Waimairi. Results were:—
SENIOR WOMEN United I v. South Brighton Singles.—Mrs H. Rogers beat Miss A. Reece, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; Mrs B. Boyd lost to Miss B. Pierce, 4-6, 7-5, 5-7; Miss A. Peppier beat Mrs S. Peacock, 6-3, 5-7, 8-6: Miss M. Cochran lost to Mrs P. Boatwood, 6-8, 9-11.
Doubles.—Mesdames Rogers and Boyd beat Misses Reece and Pierce, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3; Miss Peppier and Mrs Cochran lost to Mesdames Boatwood and Peacock, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7.
United I won by 91 games to 88. Canterbury College v. Elmwood Singles.—Miss L. J. Holland lost to Mrs M. Lawrence, 0-6, 0-6; Miss N. Vile lost to Mrs F. Cheyne, 4-6, 1-6; Miss B. Burrowes lost to Mrs M. Jeffreys, 5-7, 2-6; Miss A. Thomas beat Miss D. Dixon, 6-4, 5- 6-?. Doubles.—Misses Vile and Burrows lost to Mesdames Lawrence and Jeffreys, 3-6, 4-6; Misses Holland and Thomas lost to Mrs Cheynes and Miss Dixon, 4-6, 3-6. Elmwood won by 5 rubbers to 1. Sumner v. Second Division St. Albans beat Fendalton 12-4; Beckenham beat Avonside Church 11-5; Redcliffs beat Avonside 95 games to 93; Spreydon beat Edgeware 9-7. Under 21 Sumner beat Waimairi 10-6. INTERPROVINCIAL MATCHES WELLINGTON, March 12. The Waikato-Wellington Wilding Shield tennis challenge and Hutt Valley-Welling-ton Nunneley Casket challenge will be played at Lower Hutt on March 19 and 20.
