TIMARU NURSERY STAKES
STAR ROSA IN FORM Star Rosa’s stylish performance to wir the first division of the two-year-old parade in 2min 4 2-ssec for seven furlongs at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders Association’s trials at Addington on Tuesday has brought her into favour for the Timaru Nursery Stakes, the feature race
on the programme for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting at Washdyke to-mor-row. A racy-looking daughter of Gamble and Starace, Star Rosa has obviously been given a carefully-timed preparation by S. A. Edwards, who trains her at West Melton foi Mr R. A. Hamilton, and, pro-
vided she avoids trouble at the start, she should go close to winning. Chamfer, Sphere, and Scottish Nurse, which are trained by M. Holmes at Yaldhurst, were all placed in their divisions at Addington on Tuesday, and that form should make the combination popular with investors. Night Raider’s preparation included two races at the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting last month. A colt by Quite Sure from Black Lily, Night Raider looked in splendid condition when he raced at Addington on Tuesday, and he may earn some of the prize-money for A. T. Fairbairn, who trains him at Hornby. Direct Chief, the first of Gold Chief’s stock to race, did not appear to be extended when he finished second to Josedale Audubon after sprinting the last four furlongs in Imin 6sec in the third division at Addington on Tuesday. A goodmannered colt, Direct Chief appears to have a splendid racing temperament, and he, should eventually take high honours. Well-bred youngsters in the field which did. not parade at Addington this week include: Brilliant Light, Croughtcn, Highland Prince. Merrymaker, and Monty Frisco. One of G. W. Pankhurst’s team at Invercargill, Brilliant Light is by the Aus-tralian-bred Brilliant Globe from Creep, by Erin’s King from Jazz Queen, by Harold Direct from Ilza. Croughton, which is trained at Orari by R. Stevens for Mr J. S. South, is a colt by Springfield Globe from Lady Antrim, by John Dillon from a Wildwood mare. Highland Prince is trained at Temuka by his owner, T. H. Gunning. A gelding, he is by U. Scott from Erinara, by Jack Potts from Leila DenverAthe dam of winners in Guy Denver, Gay Paree, De la Paix. and Colossal. Bred at New Brighton by Mr J. N. Clarke, Leila Denver is by Denver Huon from Beulah G, by Geo. M. Patchen from a mare by Rodney. O. E. Hooper’s candidate, Merrymaker, is bred to win in the best classes. By Lucky Jack, the winner of two New Zealand Cup Handicaps, Merrymaker is out of a winner in Arietta, by Nelson Derby from a fine performer in Queen's Own, which took a two-mile record of 4min 22 4-ssec. By Adonis from the Sir Hector mare Country Queen, Queen’s Own also left other winners, including Pirate King to Brigand, Peter Silk to Silk Thread, and David Derby to Nelson Derby. Monty Frisco, which will race in the
interests of Messrs G. J. Phillips and A. Hattie, is trained at Washdyke by W. A. Thomas. A colt, Monty Frisco is by the American-bred Fremont from Madam Potts, by Jack Potts from Cave Belle, the dam of a winner in Adsurh.
The £7OQ stake has attracted a field of 32 youngsters and, with so many green horses engaged, luck in the barrier draw should play an important part in the finish. Providing they get a clear run, Star Rosa, Night Raider, Direct Chief, and Sphere could be prominent over the closing stages. Jottings t The annual meeting of delegates of the , New Zealand Trotting Conference will be held in Christchurch in August. Agrosan is now being trained at Templeton by D. Bennett for Mr J. Manera. An aged gelding by Nelson Derby from Prolific, Agrosan will have his first start for his new trainer in the Wairewa Handicap Trot at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting at Motukarara to-morrow. Barrier Reef will probably be sent out favourite for the Murihiku Handicap at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow.
Sir John appears to be improving under J. Purdcn’s care at Addington. He may soon win a race for Mrs M. Brown. Quarter Deck, the winner of two races
in his first three attempts this season, should be hard to beat in the Southland Three-Vear-old Stakes at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting. Trained at Oamam El Sandra gave an encouraging display at her last start to finish in third place to Blonde Sailor and Jan Marie in the first division of the H. J. Delargey Trot Handicap at the Kurow Jockey Club’s meeting at Oamaru on January 3. The winner of the first division of the Waikaura Trot Handicap at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on June 14, El Sandra should finish in the money in the first division of the Salisbury Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Glub’s meeting at Washdyke to-morrow. Going to Adelaide Conflagrate has been sold by H. Matson
and Company to go to Adelaide, where he will do stud duty. A consistent per-
former, Conflagrate, which was foaled in 1936, is by Jack Potts from Ablaze, which
left other winners in Blaydon and Great Blaze to the same sire. By Pedro Pronto. Ablaze is out of Ella wood, by Driftwood from an Irvington mare. Related to Emulous
Sirocco attracted attention to his prospects when, at his first start for the season, he finished third to Agate and Loriot after beginning slowly at the start of the first division of the Glendore Trot Handicap at the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on January 31. A half-brother to good performers in Emulous and Lightning Lady, Sirocco, which is trained at Rakaia by W. K. Tatterson, would need to show little improvement on that effort to win the Wairewa Handicap Trot at the Banks Peninsula Racing club’s meeting at Motukarara to-morrow. A Smart Pacer
Admiral Peterson impressed good judges by the easy manner in which he won the Wallaceville Handicap for Mr C. L. Rhodes at the Wellington Trotting - Club’s meeting on Saturday. Paraded in the Waiwhetu Handicap later in the afternoon, Admiral Peterson was beaten into
fourth place after appearing uplucky over the concluding stages. One of the most likely improvers in his class, Adminal Peterson should race well from scratch mark in the Washdyke Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow. Granted Leave of Absence
Mr D. B. Clarkson, who is commentator for the Wellington Racing Club and for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, has been granted leave of absence by the Wellington Racing Club m order that he may broadcast the local fixture, which clashes with the Wellington Club’s meeting. Mr J. McDonald will deputise for Mr Clarkson at Wellington.
Brackets at Washdyke The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting at Washdyke to-mor-row:—Claremont Handicap, Belshazzar and Nydia, Dalcassian and Norma’s Pride, Last Wrack and Sealand, Sandhurst and King Dix; Salisbury Handicap, All Ashore and Delphine, Baadin and Melton; Seadown Handicap, Mystery Dillon and Swithindale; Timaru Nursery Stakes, Aerogard and Globe Theatre, Bonny Opal and Dainty Doll, Bronze Gold and Duralium, Chamfer, Scottish Nurse, and Sphere; Debonair and Dominion Jack, Perpetua and Woolaway, Spring Fancy and Widow Bingen; Washdyke Handicap, Crown Plate and Royal Mint; Wai-iti Handicap, Ben Ledi and Loyal Nelson, Carisbrook and Pirouette, Sandiford and Understudy, Volo Lad and Wedding Ring. In Gunning’s Stable Delphine, which showed her best form when trained for her races in the early part of the season by the late F. J. Smith to win the second division of the Second Nursery Handicap at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting on January 10, has. been acquired by T. H. Gunning, who is now training her at Temuka. A four-year-old mare, Delphine is by Josedale Grattan from Del Potts, by Jack Potts from Delco, the dam of winners in Celebrity, Lombard, and Distributor. May Win Again Although she was handicapped by having to drag a buckled wheel and a flat tyre over the last half-mile. Sand Piper finished gamely to win the Kaikoura Handicap by a neck from Kimono Girl at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting at Rangiora last Saturday. A consistent daughter of Sandydale and Sashworthy, Sand Piper has gained a win and four minor placings in her last nine starts. On that form, she is entitled to respect in the Southland Handicap and Au Revoir Handicap at/ the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. N.Z. Metropolitan T.C.
Withdrawals for the first day of the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on Saturday, March 13, will close at 5 p.m. on Monday. Advt.
