TYPHOID FEVER AT KAIKOURA
BONUS FOR NURSES NOT APPROVED The Department of Health would not approve the payment of bonuses to members of the permanent nursing staff at the Kaikoura Hospital who had extra duties during the typhoid fever epidemic. This was reported to the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday. The department considered that such payments would be contrary to the generally-accepted standards of the nursing profession. There were 12 patients in the Kaikoura Hospital suffering from typhoid fever on January 1, it was reported to the board. Only two were febrile, and the others were awaiting routine clearance. “The treatment of patients had been very successful, and out of the 84 cases only three patients have died.” the report said. The board expressed appreciation of the help that had been given by many persons at Kaikoura, Burwood, and Christchurch.
