AUSTRALIAN DAVIS CUP CHALLENGE

PERMISSION TO SPEND DOLLAR CREDITS (Rec. 7 p:m.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 24. The Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) will allow the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia to spend up to 10,000 dollars of its credits in America on the 1948 Davis Cup challenge. A Treasury official said that Mr Chifley was prepared to make 7000 dollars available for the tour, and another 3000 dollars if the team reached the challenge round. The official asked the president of the Lawn Tennis Association Council (Sir Norman Brookes) to arrange for th* return to Australia as soon as possible of 23.000 dollars of Lawn Tennis Association credits in America. Australia’s Davis Cup team is expected to be announced next week. Record Snooker Break Acknowledged.—The Billiards Association and Control Council have certified Joe Davis’s 140 snooker break as a new world record.—London, February 24. .
