CHRISTCHURCH WATER SUPPLY

Sir,—The Christchurch City Council proposes to raise the sum of £150.000 for extensions to. and a new reservoir for, our water supply. Can you tell the ratepayers if a survey and soundings were taken some years ago for a supply of water from the Waimakariri river up-stream and brought down to our mains in Christchurch That, I think, would do away with the -need for boosting by power imo our mains in St. Albans, also with any pumping into reservoirs, and hence oe a great saving of power. Then again, the water we get from our artesians. we are told, comes from the lakes up ii the hills, principally Lake Coleridge. Therefore, I believe, if we cut out artesians we will be saving that much extra water for storage at Lake Coleridge.—Yours, etc., w v THOS. HARRISON. February 10, 1948.

*^ e . proposal to bring water from the Waimakariri to the city was investigated many years ago, but it was found that the present system gave .a better and cheaper supply,” said Mr E. Somers (City Engineer). “The same reasoning holds to-day. The source of artesian supply is not the lakes in the hills.”]
