SWANEE RIVER

TROTTING

AN IMPROVING YOUNG TROTTER Swanee River indicated that he is above the average by the way in which he won two races at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting last month and, on the strength of that form, he will probably be one of the favourites for the Progressive Handicap at -the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. Swanee River, -which is owned by Messrs L. and M. Argyle and trained by the latter at Leeston, started his career with two unplaced efforts as a four-year-old last season.

After a short spell he was put back into work and he had his first start this season at the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting on October 4, where he finished well back in the first division of the Drayton Trot Handicap. Taken to the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day,- Swanee River was beaten into fourth place in the Mitcham Handicap of two miles after trailing Bellisima fdr most of the way. A trip to the Greymouth Trotting Club’s summer meeting followed and at his first start, Swanee River beat Passive by two lengths in the Express Handicap of one mile and five furlongs. Handicapped 24 yards for his win, Swanee River finished out of the money in the Summer Handicap later in the afternoon.

On the second day of the meeting. Swanee River attracted attention to his prospects by the solid finishing effort which enabled him to win the County Handicap by a nose from Merry Man. Swanee River’s last start was in the z Kingsdown Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on January 10 where, after breaking at the end of two furlongs, he showed a lot of speed to finish third to Bellisifna and Buncrana.

One of the few of Dillon Hall’s progeny to win at the trotting gait, Swanee River is out of Wild Fly. by Frank Worthy from Wild Princess, which left winners in Prince de Oro to Rey de Oro and Royal Grattan to Grattan Loyal.

By Wildwood Jun., a son of the imported Wildwood, Wild Princess is out of Tracey Princess, by Prince Imperial from Rose, by General Tracey from Phyllis, by Berlin from a Quicksilver mare. A bold trotter, Swanee River appears to have a bright future and he should eventually take a tight mark. Jottings

Sandy’s Epic lost his chance when he broke in the early stages of the Yaldhurst Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Hillcrest, which raced unhoppled, failed to leave the mark correctly in the Papakura Handicap at Epsom on Saturday. J. D. Smith’s team at New Brighton includes Empire Girl, which will have her first start for the season at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting at Rangiora next week. By Gold Bar, Empire Girl is out of Rebel Girl, which left a winner in Suffragette to Jack Potts.

Noble Jack gave an encouraging display to finish fourth in the Advance Handicap at Addington on Saturday. A gelding by a Nobleman colt from Filigree, Noble Jack is trained at Rakaia by W. K. Tatterson for Mr J. F. Langley.

Led All the Way Beginning smartly, Captain Gaillard took the lead in the early part of the Papakura Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and, after setting a solid pace, he was never headed. Ingle Belmer. which finished half a length behind Captain Gaillard, was a neck in. front of Single Direct, then came Caledonian Gold and Bobby Burns almost in line. Captain Gaillard ran the first half-mile in lmin 6sec, the six furlongs in lmin 37 2-ssec, completing the mile and a quarter in 2min 39 2-ssec. A Gaillard gelding. Captain Gaillard, which is now trained by C. G. Smith at Takanini, is at the top of jiis form and he may show up from the 24 yards mark in the Ranfurly Handicap of a mile and a half on the concluding day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Epsom on Saturday. Championship Results Details of the Pacers’ Grand Final Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting will be given over the loudspeaker system immediately after the fifth race, and details of the Trotters’ Grand Final Handicap will be given after the sixth race at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday.

Spelling Heliopolis, which had been causing her trainer, V. Mackie, some worry recently, failed to stand up to racing at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, and she has now been turned out for a spell. The winner of three races last season, Heliopolis is an aged mare by Sandydale from Seaworthy, which left another good performer in Acropolis to Dillon Hall. By Man o’ War, Seaworthy is out of May Tracey, by Captain Tracey from Harold’s Pride, by King Harold from Lady Hope, by Del* Paso from Countess, by Berlin. May Win on Saturday Wayfarer, the winner of the second division of the Selma Trot Handicap, of two miles, at the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting on September 13, raced well at his last start to finish half a head behind On Approval in the Snowden Trot Han--dicap at the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on January 31. A brother to Haughty, the winner of two New Zealand Cup Handicaps, Wayfarer should prove hard to beat from the 12 yards mark in the Belfast Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. In Oamaru Stakes

Mr J G. Morland, Temuka, recently purchased from Mr John Johnston, Pukeuri, a two-year-old colt by Sandydale from Southern City, by Arion Ax worthy from Myra Parrish, the dam of Highland Dale and Captain Kinder. The colt, which was educated by Mr Johnston, showed a lot of ability when trained for about three months by J. M. Bain, and if he maintains his present rate of progress, he will probably race in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes in May. To be Retired Mae Wynne, which won her way to good company when racing in the interests of the Westport owner, Mr W. Roche, will be retired. She will be mated with Sandydale next season. By Wrack, Mae Wynne is \)ut of a winner at the pacing gait in Rose Queen, which left another winner in Easter Rush to Man o’ War. A Nelson Bingen mare, Rose Queen is out of Teresita, by Marvin Wilkes from a Young McKinney mare, which was out of a mare by the thoroughbred, Cloth of Gold. Began Slowly

Commotion, the winner of the Otahuhu Handicap on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, lost her chance when she began slowly in the Alexandra Handicap on the second day of the meeting on Saturday. If she leaves the mark smoothly, 1 Commotion may be prominent at the finish of the Richmond Handicap at Epsom this week.
