WORK OF CHINESE CO-OPERATIVES
VISIT OF MR P. TOWNSEND To discuss with CORSO the needs of Mr Rewi Alley’s work in China, Mr Peter Townsend, secretary of the International Committee for the Chinese Industrial is •visiting New Zealand. He went to China with a Friends Ambulance Unit from England and later became interested in Mr Alley’s projects. “The Co-operatives are holding their own and developing, even in adverse conditions,” Mr Townsend said yesterday in Christchurch. “The assistance of New Zealand with personnel, gifts in kind, and by finance is greatly appreciated.” Mr Alley was now concentrating on technical training for young Mr Townsend said. The trsirnng centre at Sandan. North China, ab-pre-sent had about 250 young men receiving instruction for a wid£ range of industrial undertakings. There was constant need for support from outside China. England and America were helping, and he had recently visited Australia to arrange more assistance from there.
