FILLMORE AND FORTUNA

TROTTING

TRANSFER TO J. B. PRINGLE’S TEAM Mr D. H. Blackie recently bought a half-share in the pacers Fillmore and Fortuna from Mr E. August, and they have now been transferred from S. M. and S. R. August’s team at Auckland to J. B. Pringle’s care at Hornby. A four-year-old gelding, Fillmore showed his best form at his first start for the season when he beat Palette by three and a half lengths in the Kerepeehi Handicap of one mile and a half at the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting on August 23. Fillmore’s only placing in his seven starts since then was a fourth to Popular Girl, Gold Strand, and Certify in the Oneroa Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on September 27. Although she is still very green, Fortuna, a three-year-old filly by Springfield Globe from Betty Wrack, gave an encouraging display to finish third to Congo Song and Beckleigh in the New Zealand Derby Stakes at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s cup meeting on November 8. A shapely filly, Fortuna should develop into a good performer with age and experience. A winner herself, Betty Wrack, the dam of these horses, is also the dam of winners in Jill and Super Globe. By Wrack, Betty Wrack is out of Nonnie, by Galindo from Ardzigylar, by Viking from the Stonyhurst mare, Mercy. Jottings Coral Princess indicated that she was back to her best form by finishing in third place to Red Hussar and Dragoman in the King George Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, She would need to show little improvement' on that effort to win the Royal Handicap at the same club’s meeting this week. Emily Volo, which is trained at New Brighton by her owner, L. Davidson, returned her supporters a double -figure win dividend when she won the Picton Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Bill Tasker, the runner-up to Entrust in the Advance Handicap at the Waikato Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, is an aged gelding by Nelson Tasker from Bell Dial Belmoral trotted fast to finish in fifth place after breaking at the start of the Otago Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday. With a smooth beginning he should earn some of the money in tne Crescent Handicap this week. A Smart Effort

Sir Vivian, the winner of tne Great Northern Trotting Derby at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, won hxs second race for the season for Mr P. V. Flexman when he registered an outstanding performance in the Te Awamutu Handicap at the Waikato Trotting .Club’s meeting at Claudelands on Saturday. With six furlongs to go Sir Vivian lost about 50 yards when he broke when attempting to jump a patch of sand, but when McKay got him balanced again he made up his ground in fine style. Once into the straight for the sprint home, Sir Vivian finished on gamely to beat Firebar by a neck.

Mr Flexman was also successful at the meeting with Onerous, which won the Introductory Handicap at the Cambridge Trotting Club's meeting on January 10. Onerous started smoothly from the 72 yards mark in the Te Kawa Handicao, and he was not expended over the concluding stages to beat Carissima by three lengths in 4min 38 l-ssec. Sir Vivian and Onerous are both racing consistently and they should add to their records at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting next month. A Solid Trotter

Driven by her owner, D. A. Withers, who trains her at Addington, Accord brought her record to nine minor placings in her 14 starts for the season when she finished third to Scots Fusilier and Mosquito in the Stewards’ Handicap, and second to Lady Inchcape in the President's Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting at Blenheim on Saturday.' An honest performer, Accord niay gain her first win for the season at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Broke Up Captain Sandy was confidently supported in some quarters to win the Southland Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, but he lost his chance when he broke at the start. If he leaves the mark smoothly, Captain Sandy may atone for his mistake with a win in the Telegraph Handicap this week Shied and Fell /

Staveley’s Lad was well placed in the early stages of the Advance Handicap at the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting at Claudelands on Saturday, but he lost his chance when he fell after shying when a cap blew off the driver of a horse in front of him. Paraded in the Taupiri Handicap later in the afternoon, Staveley’s Lad returned his • supporters a place dividend of nearly a score when he finished third to Hopeful and Ann McGregor. A likely improver, Staveley’s Lad is an aged gelding by a good performer in Auto Machine from Worthy Protection, by Worthy Bingen from a winner in Windshield, by Blue Mountain King from the Logan Pointer mare, Intaglio, which left other winners in Free Advice, Prince Parrish, Ringstone, and Durato. In turn, Free Advice, which was the best of Intaglio’s family, left some smart performers, including Horse Power, Pacing Power, Free Again, and My Lady Luck. Fast Time

indemnity recorded the fast time of 3min 15sec on the grass track at Blenheim when he finished third to Admiral Peterson and Alimony in the first division of the Trial Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. A speedy son of Dillon Dall and First Water, Indemnity, which is trained at Templeton by L. F. Berkett for Mr J. Ferguson, is engaged at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday and Monday, and. if he is successful, he will probably be taken to Auckland to race in the £5OO Wairakei Handicap, on the first day of the championship meeting next month. Not at His Best Dan Martin . received slight injuries when he got down in the float when being taken to the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting at Blenheim on Saturday and he was not able to show his best form in the trotting events. A likely type, Dan Martin, which is now trained at Rangiora by R. N. Eden for Mr J. T. Power, is a five-year-old gelding by I Lusty Volo from First Ballot, which is by Sonoma Harvester from a Woodland Whispers mare. Comfortable' Win Loyal Anthem, the winner of the second division of the Members’ Handicap at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting on January 3, paid a win dividend of just on double figures when he won the second division of the Electric Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday. A son of Grattan Loyal and a smart pacer in Cantata Loyal Anthem took the lead shortly after the start, and he always appeared to be going easily as he carried on to win by a length and a half from New Venture Paraded in the Southland Handicap later !n the afternoon, he marred his effort by breaking early in the race. Now at- Templeton Royal. Nebbj’ is a recent addition to W. R. Butt’s team at Templeton. When trained at New Brighton earlier in the season by F. R. May,-he showed his besl form to win the second division of the Ashley Handicap Trot at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting at Rangiora on October 27. A four-year-old gelding, Royal Nebby is by Übakim from Nelson Princess, which left a winner in Legionnaire to Swordsman. By Nelson Bingen, Nelson Princess Is out of Logan ; Queen, by Logan Pointer from Queen Patch, both of which were imported to i New Zealand. |
