DISPERSAL SALE 2000 GUINEAS FOR SALMAGUNDI COLT (P.A.) INVERCARGILL. January 28. A top price of 20Q0gns was paid by Mr W. E. Hazlett for a two-year-old colt by Salmagundi from Sparkle, at the dispersal sale of the Chelandry Stud today. Widespread interest was shown in the sale and an attendance of about 1200 included buyers from all parts of New Zealand and some from Australia. The 94 lots offered, brought a total of 21.640gn5, of which 15,770gns was paid for offerings on behalf of the estate of W. T. Hazlett, and 5870gns for those submitted by Mr W. E. Hazlett, and the estate of J. S. Hazlett.
The three stallions submitted, Sir Simper at 600gns. Maniototo at 500gns, and a Salmagundi—Sparkle colt at 2000gns, were. all bought by Mr W. E. Hazlett. Bidding on the Sparkle colt opened at lOOOgns, and after two bids of 500gns each, he was knocked down. It is intended to reserve him for stud duty. The 41 brood mares offered realised 9390gns, 6705gns being paid for 28 offered by the estate of Mr W. T. Hazlett, and 2685gns for 13 lots submitted by Mr W. E. Hazlett and the estate of J. S. Hazlett. The brood mares averaged 228gns. The top price was 900gns paid for Infra Red, an eight-year-old mare by Salmagundi from Dulzura by Chief Ruler from Dazzling Light. She' was bought by Mr W. Fisher, of Auckland.
Mr O. F. Watson, of Christchurch, paid 650gns for Lighthouse, a four-year-old Siegfried mare from Lucky Light, by Paper Money from Simper. Mr F. Blick, of Invercargill, p,aid 410gns for Oreti Sands, a five-year-old' Siegfried mare from Oreti Light. Sweet Sign, at 410gns, and Sieglight at 360gns were other sales. Fifteen yearlings submitted realised 2195gns, ?n average of 160gns. The Lo Zingaro—Hotch Potch filly for which Mr T. W. McMillan, of Invercargill, paid 350gns headed the yearling offerings. Mr C. Warden, of Glencoe, paid 320gns for a Sir Simper filly from Piccalilly.
Fifteen two-year-olds were offered and brought a total of 3840gns. an average of 256gns. An outstanding chestnut filly by Lo Zingaro from Infra Red, met with keen competition, and was knocked down to the Invercargill trainer. F. W. Ellis, as agent, for lOOOgns. Her dam, a Salmagundi mare from Dulzura, had changed hands earlier in the day for 900gns. A Lo Zingaro filly was the only offering apart from the Salmagundi—Sparkle colt to reach four figures. Mr A. Mclntosh, of Invercargill, paid 475gns for a Lo Zingaro—Hotch Potch fily and Mr H. G. Wallis, of Gore, bought a half-sister to Spendthrift for 410gns.
Thirteen three-yegr-olds brought 262Sgns, an average of 2Q2gns. The fop price of 575gns was paid by Wright, Stephenson and Company, Hamilton, as agents, for a Man’s Pal filly from Lucky Light by Paper Money from Simper. Timpany Bros., of Woodlands, paid 300gns for a half-brother, to Aurora Australis. A Sir Simper filly from Lorette, and a sister to the Grand National Steeplechase winner, Anglo-French, Was secured by Mr S. G. Farry, of Gore, for 270gns. Older horses were not keenly sought and four four-year-olds brought a total of 490gns. One was a half-brother by Sir Simper to Spendthrift, which was secured by Mr F. J. Boyle, fo Heddon Bush, for 90gns.
