VANDALISM AT SIGN OF THE KIWI
CITY COUNCIL PLANNING REPAIRS Vandals have damaged the Sign of the Kiwi on the saddle between Governor’s Bay and Christchurch in recent months. A window at the back of the building has been smashed with a makeshift jemmy torn from some ornamental ironwork, the window fitting has been torn from the sill, and the porch in front of the building is Jittered with glass from broken beer bottles. The building is also showing signs of damage by exposure to the weather. Sheets of iron have been torn from the roof, probably by the action of the wind, and other sheets are loose. Large boards are rotting, and there are signs of decay in the window sills. Control of the Summit road reserves and the four roadhouses on them was formerly vested in the Lands and Survey Department, which had no organisation to give them adequate protection. Last year control passed to the City Council. Cabinet approval of the change has been conveyed to the council, but it has not had the opportunity to take measures for the protection of the roadhouses. The City Engineer’s department, however, has been instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of putting the Sign of the Kiwi and the Sign of the Bellbird, in order. The Sign of the Bellbird was badly damaged by vandals six months ago.
