CLASH WITH POLICE IN KOWLOON
CHINESE RESIST ACTION TO DESTROY SHACKS HONG,KONG, January 12. Police and Chinese “squatters” in the former walled city of Kowloon fought a pitched battle this morning when the police sought to destroy 20 shacks which had been re-erected since the site was cleared for health reasons on January 5 after 700 people had rejected eviction orders. More than 100 Chinese hurled stones at -a.E * adva ncing police who replied with tear-gas bombs, revolvers, and batons. .Most of the shots were fired in the air but several Chinese were wounded by bullets and bomb fragments. The police, behind rattan shields, suffered only minor casualties. They eventually overcame the opposition and destroyed the shacks. The incident was the culmination' of a two months’ long dispute, similar to those recurring over the last 50 years over the jurisdiction of this tiny area within leased territories.
