STUDENTS’ HEALTH SCHEME
ARRANGEMENTS NOT YET COMPLETED
Although negotiations for the establishment of a students’ health scheme at Canterbury University College have not yet been completed, it is still possible that the plan may operate when the college session begins in about six weeks. Restoration of the college gymnasium after its war-time service as a store room for scientific equipment is almost finished. The gymnasium itself has been renovated and shower and dressing rooms, examination rooms, and physical welfare officer’s quarters are being provided. Mr W. C. Colee, chairman of the Canterbury University College Council, said yesterday that as far as he knew final details of the scheme had not yet been arranged. It was planned to offer voluntary medical examination to all students and the subsequent provision of recommended remedial exercises and outdoor sports under proper supervision. When engaged on concentrated study many students tended to neglect their health and the scheme was designed to keep them in good physical condition and also raise general standards in the community. Arrangements still to be made include the appointment of medical examiners and possible provision for X-ray examinations.
