FINE PERFORMANCE AT WASHDYKE

The consistent Calando, which had raced well to win the second division of the Intermediate Handicap on the first day of the Greymouth Trotting Club s meeting and to finish in second place to Aloysius in the Railway Handicap on the second day of the meeting on Monday, was allowed to return his supporters a dividend of more than a score when he won the Pareora Handicap from Gay Note at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. „ . Awadale, Ipso Facto, Our Babe, Gallant Ruth, Great Wonder, and Crimson Trail lost ground at the start and the-field was disorganised before two furlongs had been covered when Ipso Factor fell. Trained at Washdyke Quarterdeck, the winner of the Winton Juvenile Stakes at the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting on December 27, won the Centennial Trotting Stakes by a neck from Victory Dale at the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. Decisive Win Lady Spray, which was beaten out of the money after setting the pace for more than a mile and three-quarters in the John Hole Memorial Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, gained a decisive win in the sprint event, the Taiko Handicap. Lady Spray began smoothly to follow Fair Play and Carisbrook in the early stages, and her driver, S. A. Edwards, was content to wait until about two furlongs from home, before improving her position. Once she was allowed to do her best. Lady Spray soon settled the issue, winning by a length from Bonny Clare, with tne fastfinishing Queen Jewel in third place. A neatly-made mare, Lady Spray, which was paraded in sparkling condition by J. Purdon, who trains her at Addington, is by Gamble from a good performer in Ki’ina, which took a record of 2min 10 3-ssec. His Excellency gained his second win for the season when he beat a useful field in the Kerrytown Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. His Excellency was the smartest to begin, but D. C. Watts steadied him in behind Rural Lady and Gallant Thorpe. The favourite, Peter’s Pal. raced up to take the lead with four furlongs to go and he was closely followed by Rural Lady and His Excellency approaching the entrance to the straight. His Excellency was always master of the situation over the concluding stages and he appeared to have something in reserve as he passed the winning post a length clear of Hydro Belle. One of F. E. Upton's team at Templeton, His Excellency is an attractive pacer, and he appears to have good prospects. Set the Pace

After taking the lead with just over a furlong covered. Frisco Volo set the pace in the Dobson Trot Handicap at the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, and he was not troubled to win by a length from Gallant Girl. Bondage, Amos Grattan, Index, Dominion Jack, and Terminal, all lost their chances in the early stages of the race.
