HOUSE GUTTED IN COBDEN
NARROW ESCAPE OF FAMILY The occupants of a six-roomed house at 88 Fox street, Cobden, had a narrow escape when an outbreak of fire occurred about 11.40 p.m. on Saturday. Hearing a crackling, noise at the rear of the premises, Mrs Williams, the wife of the owner and occupier. Mr George Williams, got out of bed to investigate and found that the back of the house was on fire near a room in which several children were sleeping. The family evacuated the house, which was
gutted. Clothing and personal effects were also lost. The alarm was given quickly and the Cobden Fire Brigade, assisted by the Greymouth Brigade, went to the fire. Although the house was gutted and the flames spread rapidly through the building, it was npt entirely destroyed.
