PROPOSALS TO CONGRESS

MR TRUMAN’S POLICY ATTACKED CRITICISM BY SENATOR TAFT (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 8. Senator Robert Taft, a. candidate for Kepublican nomination for the Presidency, to-day strongly attacked the proposals in Mr Truman’s message to Congress yesterday. He said that they represented a 10year Santa Claus prosperity programme that would leave as much freedom in the United States as Stalin’s five-year plan had left in Russia. Senator Taft, who was broadcasting over a national network, estimated that Mr Truman’s recommendations would mean a total immediate increase in expenditure of 10,000,000,000 dollars a year, with more increases later. Senator Taft particularly opposed as “discriminatory” the proposal to ease the burden on the individual taxpayer and increase the taxes on corporation profits.

He said that the Republicans proposed to proceed with their own programme to stop inflation. They would really cut all taxes and cut them for good.
