LOSS AT HUNTLY MINES
MANY EMPLOYEES ABSENT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 9. Fewer than half the coal miners in the Huntly district returned to work to-day when the mines resumed operation after a three weeks' Christmas recess. It is expected that most of the men will report for duty on Monday morning when they will be able to begin their regular weekly routine. An official of the Mines Department said that the men had refused an offer made in December of double pay if they returned to work on January 5. He felt that many men didi not wish to start on Thursday, work for two days, and then knock oft again for the week-end.
Only about half the mines’ normal outputs were hewn to-day. At Taupiri the figure was 382 tons, compared with 780 tons on a normal day, and at Glen Afton, where the normal daily output is 900 tons, 310 tons were produced.
