FIRES IN RURAL DISTRICTS
PREVENTION COMMITTEE’S BULLETIN
The Canterbury Rural Fire Prevention Committee is gratified by the cooperation received from the public io a period of serious hazard, and a bulletin issued yesterday said there had been an excellent response to warnings against lighting fires arid also commendable vigilance against scattered outbreaks. Already there had been a number of cases where motorists and others had given warning of outbreaks by telephone to the nearest post office, thus .enabling combat measures to be undertaken and fires to be brought under control quickly. A request that persons giving such warnings should endeavour to give more specific information on the location of fires was made 'by the committee. With the country tinder-dry, serious delays might occur while the precise area was checked. It was suggested that those travelling in unfamiliar districts should note prominent landmarks, cross-roads, and distances to enable them to give exact information on the location of possible fires for the guidance of wardens and their helpers.
