MOTOR-SHIP ASHBURTON
ARRIVAL AT LYTTELTON FROM LIVERPOOL
On her first voyage to New Zealand, and bringing a large cargo just in time for this year s import licences, the Australind Steam Shipping Company’s new motor-ship Ashburton arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning from Liverpool, via Panama. The Ashburton loaded motor-cars, machinery, general cargo, and 800 tons of salt at Liverpool, and will discharge at Lyttelton. Dunedin, and New Plymouth.
Launched from the yards of William Denny and Brothers, Dumbarton, in July, 1946. the Ashburton is of 5005 tons, her principal dimensions being: length 416 feet, beam 56.2 feet, depth 24.8 feet. She is flush-decked, with a cruiser stern, and her single screw is driven by a six-cylinder BurmeisterWain engine. Her first voyage was made to Australia. Captain F. W. Mould is in command of the Ashburton. He formerly commanded the Kaipaki.
