OBITUARY

MRS CHARLES BUCHANAN Many friends in Canterbury will learn with deep regret that Mrs Emma Dorothy Buchanan, wife of Mr Charles Buchanan, Naseby street, died suddenly at Heriot on Wednesday. Mr and Mrs Buchanan left Christchurch at the end of last week for the south to spend Christmas with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs L. Sutton, Heriot. On Wednesday Mrs Buchanan became seriously ill, and died that evening. By her death, her relatives and all who knew her have lost a friend on whom they could depend for loyal and kindly help in any circumstances and the Red Cross Society has lost a staunch, earnest and most efficient supporter. Since the outbreak of war, she attended regularly at the Red Cross depot in Cashel street, where she was one of the leading workers in the cutting out and sewing room, and she continued her activities there, whenever she was needed, till the time of her death. She was also a member of the executive and one of the most dependable and capable members of the Merivale sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, and a generous helper at the many sales held to raise funds for the society. Her interest was also given to the Navy League, of which her husband is honorary treasurer, and to other patriotic and welfare ations.During the war, Mrs Buchanan s family—two daughters and a son—were all on active services overseas, and she suffered considerable anxiety in their regard. Her son, Mr Gordon Buchanan, was posted missing and for many months his parents did not know if he were alive. Eventually they learnt that he was a prisoner of war and he was liberated when hostilities ended. Miss Joan Buchanan served as a masseuse in the Pacific, the Middle East, and later in Japan, and her sister, now Mrs Sutton, served as a Voluntary Aid. Mrs Buchanan was a member of the well-known Holmes family, her father, the late Mr Gordon Holmes, being a lone* established and prominent settler in the Rakaia district. . . The funeral will take place in Christchurch on Monday morning.
